Warframe Tau: A New Level for the Shooter

Digital Extremes developers have announced a large-scale project Warframe: Tau — the second solar system in the game's universe, which will be released this year. This update is positioned as a significant step in the franchise's development, as players have been using the Original System for 12 years.

Fornax — A City of Noir and Dark Secrets

The action unfolds in the city of Fornax, which ring-like surrounds one of Tau's planets. The architecture is inspired by Blade Runner, "Boardwalk Empire," and "The Sopranos" — according to creative director Rebecca Ford. Fornax is distinguished by black rain that floods the streets and tunnels, and a substance called The Bloom, which plays a key role in the update's storyline.

The city contrasts with a variety of locations: opulent casinos with gilding and jazz clubs sit alongside miserable slums. This disparity highlights the theme of exploitation and addiction that underlies Tau's narrative.

Brysko — A New Detective Among Warframes

Players will be accompanied by Brysko — a new detective Warframe with the voice of the famous actor Matt Mercer. The character is armed with a Core Cracker revolver, throwing cards, and a faithful four-legged companion.

Brysko's abilities reflect his detective theme and gambling:

  • Cards as combat tactics
  • Portau minigame with strategic elements
  • Special harpoon (grappleshot) for navigating the city and casinos

Addiction as a Central Theme

Digital Extremes has not shied away from serious issues. The update explores the theme of addiction — both to The Bloom and to gambling in fashionable establishments. Creative director Ford shared that they consulted the experiences of developers, many of whom have personally encountered the effects of addiction.

"Of course, it might be uncomfortable for some, but for us, it's a way to acknowledge the problem instead of ignoring it," Ford explained. "Addiction isn't always a choice; it's often the result of circumstances." This approach makes Tau a more mature project than previous updates.

Expanded System with Two Regions

The update will launch two regions with new mission types. Developers describe Fornax as falling between classic open worlds (like 2017's Plains of Eidolon) and modern Warframe updates, with several player hubs of different aesthetics.

A separate autumn update has also been announced, which will bring the new icy Warframe Iceblade of Narin and a rework of the character Banshee.

Conclusion

Warframe: Tau will be both an ambitious expansion of the game's universe and a brave attempt to integrate deep social issues into it. This year's release promises to be a turning point for the franchise.
