Red Hook Studios suddenly surprised fans of the genre with the announcement of a new expansion called The Fire's Edge for the original Darkest Dungeon game. This unexpected release is meant to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the cult grim project, which first entered the market many years ago — on January 19, 2016.

Return to the acclaimed classic after a long break

The second part of the series, Darkest Dungeon 2, although it garnered generally positive reviews upon its release, never achieved the same absolute and universal acclaim among the gaming community as the original. This fact is regularly highlighted in user reviews on the Steam platform. Given this, Red Hook Studios has decided to refocus its attention on the first installment. The release of The Fire's Edge will be the first full-fledged DLC for the original game since 2020, effectively ending a massive six-year gap in new content releases.

This expansion directly borrows some of the developments from the second game, transporting two new heroes back to the grim dungeons of the original. The proposed classes differ significantly in their approach to tactical combat:

  • Duelist: an incredibly complex character focused on dealing massive amounts of damage to enemies. She constantly and dynamically dances between different party positions during skirmishes. The Duelist effectively alternates between aggressive and defensive combat stances, successfully utilizing the deadly Riposte mechanic.
  • Runaway: a positionally flexible attacking hero. She utilizes a completely new and unique type of damage over time in combat, which broadens players' tactical horizons.

Updated mechanics and Hamlet expansion

The integration of the Runaway logically led to the appearance of another key innovation in The Fire's Edge expansion: the introduction of a full-fledged burn combat mechanic. Now players will be able to use fire to effectively fight monsters during difficult expeditions.

The character equipment system will also undergo significant changes. The developers confirmed that trinkets will receive completely overhauled new action mechanics. In addition to combat updates, the expansion offers innovations directly to the player's base. The familiar Hamlet will receive three entirely new districts for construction: Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp.
