Sony Santa Monica Studios officially surprised the gaming community by announcing a new installment of the famous franchise titled God of War: Laufey. The project's presentation became one of the main events of the massive PlayStation's Summer State of Play showcase, where the developers not only revealed the game's existence but also immediately demonstrated an impressive 23 minutes of opening gameplay.
A New Perspective: Journey to the Everywhen
The plot of God of War: Laufey offers a completely new concept for the series. This time, the main protagonist is not the usual Spartan, but Faye (Laufey) — Kratos' wife and Atreus' mother. The game will focus on the events that happen to the heroine after her death.
The otherworldly adventures will unfold in a special dimension, which is a grandiose afterlife of the gods. This place was named Everywhen. Chronologically, the events of the new game are set to take place directly parallel to the main storyline of the God of War game released in 2018. This approach will allow players to see the familiar universe from a different angle and learn about Faye's fate at the time when Kratos and Atreus were just beginning their journey.
Unique Companions of the Main Heroine
Since Faye is in the otherworldly dimension of the gods, she will not be left alone. According to the materials shown during the State of Play, the game introduces quite unusual companions who will keep her company in her travels through the world of Everywhen.
Among Faye's partners in the afterlife are:
- A talking gelatinous cube: a weird but interactive companion capable of having dialogues with the main heroine.
- Sword ribbon: another essential gameplay element and Faye's partner in her adventures after death.
It was precisely through the dialogues with the talking cube and the sword ribbon that players learned key details about the nature of the Everywhen dimension and its purpose as the afterlife of the gods.
Release Date and Expectations
For many fans of Sony Santa Monica Studios' work, the announcement came as a surprise also because the project is heading for release much faster than expected. The developers have officially confirmed the release date of the new game.
Players will be able to explore the parallel dimension alongside Faye as early as February 16, 2027. The fact that the creators have already shown a large 23-minute segment from the game's introduction indicates the deep level of polish and development of the project.
God of War: Laufey has every chance to become a breath of fresh air for the franchise thanks to the shift in focus to a different character and the use of a completely new concept of the gods' afterlife. All that remains is to wait for 2027 to arrive in order to fully dive into the story of Kratos' wife.
