In honor of the third anniversary of the Baldur's Gate 3 release, Larian studio published interesting player statistics collected over the project's existence. These data reveal not only the most popular choices in the game but also highly unexpected, and sometimes cruel, community trends.

Player cruelty and NPC victims

According to the developers' infographic, players most frequently killed the story character Zevlor, a tiefling from the Druid Grove. However, the biggest surprise came from the statistics regarding another tiefling — the bard Alfira. Over three years, the number of her murders reached the mark of 2.62 million.

Interestingly, most of these murders were committed by players who did not choose the Dark Urge origin. For Dark Urge characters, murdering Alfira in the camp happens automatically and is an unavoidable story step demonstrating their nature. Instead, regular players had no such excuses, making this choice entirely their conscious decision.

Favorite weapons and financial records

In the game's final battle, the powerful bow Gontr Mael became the absolute leader among weapons. This choice was made by 33.4 million players, which is almost 10 million more than the two-handed sword Baldurian's Giantslayer. The bow deals significant damage, hastens the character, and gives a chance to cast a useful spell. There were also those who approached the final confrontation with the giant brain with humor: the developers noted players who brought a board with meat cold cuts to the battle.

Economic statistics also have their interesting figures:

  • Less than 1% of players were able to accumulate 180,000 gold coins in a single playthrough.
  • Also less than 1% spent more than 120,000 gold, which, according to Larian's calculations, equals the cost of approximately 24 naked statues from the characters Stoney and Boney at the circus.
  • Individual players made over 560 manual saves during a single campaign.

Unusual screen formats and the future of the series

Aside from in-game decisions, the studio paid attention to the technical habits of players. Over 9,000 people played in a vertical screen format with a 9:16 aspect ratio. Another 114 players chose a square 1:1 format, reminiscent of classic role-playing games from past decades.

In the years since release, the developers actively supported the game, adding official mod support and expanding endings, especially for the Dark Urge storyline. Currently, Larian has moved on to working on their new role-playing game in the Divinity universe.

Meanwhile, the future of the series remains in the hands of Wizards of the Coast. It is currently unknown who exactly will develop a possible sequel. Studio Owlcat is mentioned among the contenders, although it is currently busy with the projects Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy and Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Wizards of the Coast itself is also working on an internal game in the D&D universe — an action-adventure game titled Warlock.

Baldur's Gate 3 became a true phenomenon that united the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons and video games. The published statistics only confirm the scale of the project and the unpredictability of the gaming community.
