IO Interactive Regains Project Fantasy: What to Expect from the Studio
IO Interactive has regained full ownership of its online RPG Project Fantasy after Xbox terminated the publishing and funding agreement for the project. This decision, announced on July 7, forced the developers to fundamentally rethink their development strategy.
Major Changes Are Coming
Regaining control over Project Fantasy did not come without sacrifices for IO Interactive. The studio is closing its Istanbul office, which had only opened in 2023. In addition, the company is undergoing a staff reduction process, although the exact number of affected employees has not been disclosed. Management acknowledges that the colleagues they are being forced to let go were "a significant part of what makes IOI what it is."
Such restructuring became necessary in order to remain financially stable after the breakup of the partnership with Xbox. Now the studio must self-fund its ambitious RPG project while simultaneously developing its other games.
A New Direction: Focus on Internal Projects
The main shift in IO Interactive's strategy is a return to "internal core projects" instead of developing external games and mobile spin-offs. This means the studio has reconsidered its priorities and is ready to concentrate on developing its own franchises.
This reorientation raises certain questions about the future. In particular, doubts arise regarding potential sequels to the successful game 007: First Light and the partnership with Amazon MGM Studios. However, it has not been explicitly stated whether this means the discontinuation of these projects (or their reassessment).
Will Hitman Return?
The new direction gives hope for a faster return of the beloved franchise about Agent 47. Last year, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak confirmed that new Hitman projects will be developed. Under the new circumstances, with the studio focused on internal IP, developing a new game about the hired assassin may become more of a priority.
About Project Fantasy
The company describes Project Fantasy as "a world and a game designed to entertain players and expand for many years to come." Although the exact genre of the project remains not fully specified, it is clear that this is an ambitious and long-term initiative for the studio.
Conclusion
IO Interactive faces a major challenge: balancing the ambitious development of Project Fantasy with a focus on already established franchises. While the staff reductions and office closure are painful decisions, they indicate that the company is firmly determined to put its operations in order and ensure the long-term development of its projects.
